CASE STUDIES
The Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA)
The background
ReCreate runs the 2- day VLA management development programme for all new first line managers.
The audience
All new managers and staff joining the organisation at management grade are required to attend the programme. This means that the experience of participants in terms of managing people covers a wide spectrum. Some delegates are completely new to management; whilst for others, the programme offers a chance to hone skills.
Delegates also vary in terms of job role and backgrounds. Many are notable scientists whilst others may be managing administrative teams.
Finally, delegates come from different cultural backgrounds, as the VLA attracts staff globally.
The process
We worked with the VLA to establish what they felt it was vital for every manager to know in their work context. The VLA signed off a detailed training design overview; on the basis of this we then developed all course materials which again were signed-off. Subject areas include: the role of the manager, delivery of results, communication and leading a team.
Key design decisions
® We incorporated activities that appeal to every learning style; we use role play for the “activist” and “pragmatist”; we explain the reasoning and research behind management models for the “theorist”. We include case studies that appeal to “reflectors”.
® We find that for scientific or academic audiences it is important to include research and evidence to back up a particular approach.
® Throughout the workshop, we ask delegates to build up a personal profile of themselves as they complete key activities. This, regardless of their grade or experience, means they can directly relate and apply the knowledge gained in the programme.
Key delivery points
® During workshops, by constantly changing the group dynamics our trainer ensures that experienced managers do not dominate; moving delegates into different syndicate groups, for example.
® This audience enjoys debate and our trainer encourages this.
® Our trainers are also aware of cultural differences; for example, in some cultures participants may dislike being “put on the spot”. Our trainer is mindful of this and avoids this happening.
Client comment
“The VLA has retained the Investors in People award for a number of years with the criteria becoming ever more challenging. This means our training providers have to deliver training to a high standard and have a flexible approach and Recreate Learning Ltd meets those requirements.”
