Natural England
Natural England required innovative ways to produce essential technical training for a wide group of learners. They wanted their people to have fast access to the development they needed, whilst operating in a context of tight financial and mileage budgets. Within this context, our challenge was to work with their subject matter experts to convert their knowledge and experience into a high quality, highly accessible product that others could easily learn from.
Design
In 2009/10 we designed and developed a number of “Workshop in a Box” products for Natural England, which enabled internal technical experts to easily deliver internal training on their specialist subject in a consistent fashion.
Each “Workshop in a Box” contained a comprehensive set of training resources so that a network of subject matter experts rather than professional trainers could run sessions all over the country.
Each “Workshop in a Box” set included scripted trainer notes, presentation materials, trainee notes, case studies, exercises, quizzes, and ideas for learning reinforcement and measurement. The approach created a dynamic workshop-style atmosphere where participants develop their understanding by actively discussing and considering real issues.
Their experts commented on our ability to quickly grasp complex technical information and convert this into relevant learning content.
Building on the success of the “Workshop in a Box” concept we are now also delivering a range of bespoke rapid e-learning Articulate products in Natural England. Subjects include customer service, landscape character assessment and climate change.
Adding e-learning materials to our range of products has provided even more flexibility to the way that we can help Natural England’s learners access training.
For example, our programme on climate change can be delivered in three different ways based on the same learning content: via a workshop, an online seminar or by an e-learning course.
The outcome
The training we have developed in partnership with Natural England has helped reduce the amount of travel and carbon required to attend training events. Non-professional trainers have been able to deliver a consistent range of quality sessions around real issues. Learners have been positive about the approach and the learning it has enabled.
