CASE STUDIES
HMP Woodhill
HMP Woodhill is a high security prison.
The requirement: induction of staff
ReCreate was commissioned by the prison to create a bespoke learning solution for its induction of staff.
From discussion with senior prison management, ReCreate determined that the learning solution needed to:
® provide the key essential information necessary for induction
® be available from day one of the staff arriving at the prison
® begin the work of making all staff aware of the key mission and purpose of the prison and how they could contribute to key organisational objectives
® act as a reference point to return to for essential information when in the workplace
® span a wide audience, from senior to junior staff
® involve line managers to ensure a consistent approach to the whole induction process beyond the initial classroom period
® be cost-effective and easy for the prison to update
® be robust enough to assist the prison in regaining Investors in People status.
The solution
The key delivery mechanism chosen and agreed by the client was an Open Learning workbook available to all inductees.
It has a range of activities and represents the essential information that every inductee must know. It can also be taken back into their workplace and therefore becomes a useful easy-to-use reference tool in the first months of employment.
Inductees complete the open learning together before going to their workplace.
We also produced a Manager’s Guide which explains:
® The induction process and how it continues for the first 3-6 months of employment
® The manager’s role in induction
® Checklists to help the manager structure the workplace induction
® Supporting information if the inductee starts work directly in the workplace and therefore needs to complete the open learning guide in the workplace.
Meeting the client brief
The open learning workbook format means everyone can receive this on day one regardless of the their start date, and the prison Training and Development team can prove to those that audit them that they are delivering essential induction information to new starters.
The workbook itself is very visual and the text is as spare, direct and straightforward as possible but all the visuals have a sophistication about them so they can appeal to the whole spectrum of the audience. The workbook contains activities and tests so learners have to interact with the materials.
Having ensured that we spent time in determining the specific brief required by this client, with its particular specialist needs and requirements, ReCreate produced a solution which completely met the client requirements.
Client comment
“The programme has been running for over two years and we’ve had many positive comments about how it has helped them to feel integrated into the workforce and valued by the establishment. Since introducing this tool we have achieved IiP accreditation."
