CASE STUDIES

B&Q

B&Q had developed a new Capability Framework showing required people management competencies for managers at various levels throughout the organisation and asked us to create a development tool which would connect these competencies with the everyday development activities that can take place in stores.

Analysis

We analysed the Capability Framework and visited a store to understand the roles of the various managers and to assess which capabilities could be more fully developed through the challenges.  These were then mapped out on a matrix and discussed and agreed with the client.

Our solution

Our idea was to design a series of Development Challenges that managers would undertake at work, which could be built into their normal routine and tasks.  Available on the Intranet, these challenges could be printed and were small enough to fit into the B&Q apron which all managers wear in-store.  Each challenge consisted of an overview, where to start, the primary capability the challenge was designed to meet, the details of the stages involved, evaluation methods and success criteria.  This card structure was agreed at the outset.

Topics covered included: plan and action a development day for the team; improve service for a particular customer group; produce a development plan for a team member and act as their coach; implement a behavioural change in the management team.

We ensured that the challenges used the style and language of other products in the client’s suite so our solution would fit seamlessly with these.

Business benefits

® A consistent, structured approach to on-the-job training across multi-sites and management roles.

® Development of management competencies whilst at the same time bringing real business improvement in areas such as team working and team management, as well as business activities such as merchandising.

® Can be integrated into a manager’s normal workload thus avoiding non-operational days in a classroom environment.

® Builds relationships across teams.

Evaluation

At our project review, B&Q said that the project had been smooth and we had been able to mesh the challenges with the rest of their provision.  They also commented on the extremely high standard of writing.
